GRIT is a series of portraits depicting Black women painted with a raw and confrontational directness. The contrasting black and yellow combined with the use of negative space builds tension that creates energy that radiates outward from the totem-like figures. Okoro's influences include '90s fashion photography, the ancient Mumuye sculptures of Nigeria, and the sculptural work of Elizabeth Catlett.
