Solo exhibition: “Mad Explosive Spontaneity,” Maddox Gallery London, February 24-March 24, 2022
Mad Explosive Spontaneity is a lyric from MC and trailblazer for women in hip-hop, Bahamadia. The line alludes to the lyricist’s ability to shine in an industry that marginalizes the contributions of women. She uses word play, allusions, and jazz samples to make her point.
…capabilities of spontaneity within me depicted kicked it true vibes pops jazz but collaborated with the cool known flows but unfamiliar grooves soothe individual moods like soul food for thought… —Bahamadia
The exhibition includes 12 conceptual portraits that capture a moment of spontaneity in each subject’s life.
Artist Dawn Okoro explores the idea of personal style as rebellion, with individuals presenting themselves truthfully and resisting societal expectations. Okoro is inspired by hip-hop, punk, and the compositional techniques used in fashion photography.
